How & Why To Pray God’s Names is to illustrate how God reveals Himself to us when we pray His Name, as well as how it’s God’s desire for us to pray His Names.
One of the things that grabbed my attention in studying God’s Names is that He already is what we need Him to be before we call on Him!
By praying the Names of God you will experience His tangible presence, and feel how doubts in your heart decrease while faith increases.
The Name of God you pray will give you an image of Him in your spirit that reveals His majesty and splendor in another dimension.
Your prayers will be answered in more ways you could ever imagine that will reveal His glorious power to you.
Praying God’s Names is a truly anointed experience and if you never prayed God’s Names may this article encourage you to do so.
8 Different Ways To Pray God’s Names
1. Call On God’s Name
“Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples!”
1 Chronicles 16:8
This is the composition of David’s first psalm, and probably the first psalm used for the tabernacle service.
God yearns for us to call on His Name, and when we use His Name to call on Him, it is a very strong form of prayer.
When we call on His Name, not only will He hear us, but every creature in the spiritual realm will also know it.
We can testify of God’s greatness and make His deeds known among the people, and there is no better way to do it than to tell them about His characteristics from His Names!
We can be confident in this promise from Psalm 91:15 where God tells us when we abide in Him, He will answer when we call on Him, in trouble He will be with us, deliver and honor us.
Example: Light of the World, I give thanks to your Name and call on Your Name today to let Your light shine on my life and circumstances. You are Mighty In Battle, I call on You to show Yourself mighty on my behalf. Let me make known Your deeds among the peoples and everyone will know You are the only Prince of Peace.
When you are interceding for others, You can call the Name of the Lord over them for the need they have. Are they sick? Healer! Are they in trouble? Helper! Do they need God? Savior!
2. Confess God’s Name
“Or if Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have sinned against You, and return and confess Your name, and pray and make supplication before You in this temple, then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of Your people Israel, and bring them back to the land which You gave to them and their fathers.”
2 Chronicles 6:24-25
In this prayer, Solomon intercedes on behalf of Israel who sinned against God.
Whenever we ourselves have sinned, we can confess our sins and His Name, this is also a very powerful Scripture to pray if you are interceding for other people or nations.
God grant His forgiveness and restoration to His children’s humble confessions and repentance of sins.
When praying His Names during confession the Holy Spirit usually fills your heart with humility.
Example: High Priest, I confess Your Name, and ask for forgiveness for my sins (if you intercede for other people or nations you can name them here.) You are my Helper, God of the whole earth, God of truth, God Most High, God Who Does Wonders, God Who Saves, God Who Sees! May Your Name be glorified on the earth.
3. Declare God’s Name
“To declare the name of the Lord in Zion, And His praise in Jerusalem,”
Psalm 102:21
To declare God’s Name is to make an announcement of His characteristics, making it official.
When we declare God’s Names in our prayer time we tell our problems and circumstances how big our God is.
This will fill our hearts with new comfort and courage and we will know that God is bigger than any problem we may face.
Our motivation to declare God’s Name should always be to give Him glory and praise His Name.
Example: Fortress, I declare Your Name over every area of my life, let Your Name echo over the nations of the earth. You alone are our Foundation, our Fountain, Fortress, and Savior! May Your Name be glorified over the world!
5. Praise God’s Name
“Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord, Praise the name of the Lord! Blessed be the name of the Lord From this time forth and forevermore! From the rising of the sun to its going down The Lord’s name is to be praised.”
Psalm 113:1-3
When we know God’s Name we will spontaneously break out and worship Him, telling Him how great, mighty, glorious, and full of wonder He is.
To praise God by praying His Names we will be filled with awe of His splendor and majesty.
As believers, we are both God’s children, and servants. As servants of the Highest God our motivation is bigger to give Him all the honor He deserves.
When we pray His Name, we exalt Him for the character that His Name resembles.
We realize we don’t worship any god, but the One and Only God, and He reveals Himself to us through His character.
By praying His Names we can be sure that we are closer to worshiping Him in a way that is acceptable to Him, in spirit and in truth.
God is the same yesterday, today, and forevermore, and is worthy to be praised forevermore by His servants.
To praise Him from the rising of the sun until it’s going down means we must praise Him throughout the day, every day.
Example: Lord You are worthy of our praises. You are my Creator, my Hiding Place, King of kings and so much more. Almighty God You are everything. Blessed be Your Name Lord, from the rising of the sun to its going down, let all the people bless Your holy Name!
6. Proclaim God’s Name
“For I proclaim the name of the Lord: Ascribe greatness to our God. He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He.”
Deuteronomy 32:3-4
The Name of God is worthy to be proclaimed all over the earth.
By proclaiming His Name, not alone do we glorify Him, but also proclaim His characteristics over ourselves and our circumstances. Christ is our Rock, and everything He does is perfect, He is just and fair and there is no injustice found in Him.
By proclaiming His character we bring His characteristics from heaven to earth, thereby glorifying Him, and bringing a shift in the spiritual realm.
One of the wonderful benefits to proclaim His Name is that you can feel how His peace and power fill you simultaneously.
Example: Wonderful Counsellor, I proclaim Your Name over my life, our nation, and the earth. Let everyone see how Wonderful You are. You are my Great God, everything about You is perfect You are my Rock, Truth, and Salvation, my Righteous God, let all the earth be filled with Your Wonderful Name.
7. Walk-In God’s Name
“Who among you fears the Lord? Who obeys the voice of His Servant? Who walks in darkness And has no light? Let him trust in the name of the Lord And rely upon his God.”
Isaiah 50:10
This Scripture compliment 2 Corinthians 5:7 that we walk by faith and not by sight.
When we have faith, we will trust God and rely on Him. To trust in the Name of the Lord is to know that He will show Himself strong on your behalf and manifest His character to you.
For instance, if you need provision and trust in the Lord Who Provides, He will provide for you, if you need Him to help you, He will be your Helper. By praying God’s Names you will start to ‘walk’ in His Names, in the light seeing where you are and where you are going, not like walking in the dark where you cannot see anything.
Example: Alpha and Omega, You are my everything, my Shepherd, Comforter, Author And Perfector Of Our Faith, teach me to walk by faith, and not by sight, in Your Name alone!
8. Worship God’s Name
“They will love Me and worship in My Name.”
Isaiah 56-6 (CEV)
Worship is God’s love language.
When we are in a loving relationship with God, spending time with Him, and praying His Name, our natural response will be to love Him and worship Him.
It will not be something that we know we must do, for it is what God desires, but it will be a natural, spontaneous response to love and worship Him from the heart.
Example: Mighty God, You are love, the Eternal God, there is none like You, I love You, You are the Desire Of Nations, the Bread Of Life, You are full of glory, splendor, and majesty, I will worship Your holy Name!
It is my prayer that you will know God in deeper ways you ever thought possible to be strong and carry out great exploits for Him!
“But the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.”
Daniel 11:32
Everything in Him, unto Him, and to glorify His Holy Name!
